PENCIL LINES

WOW! THANK YOU ONE AND ALL!

This year's audience ~ bigger and more enthusiastic than ever!

This year’s “2D OR NOT 2D Animation Festival” lived up to all expectations. The entries were bigger than ever before, the audience was larger than before and the enthusiasm and appreciation for the films shown was louder and more evident than ever before. Indeed, I was reminded that it is only when sitting in an audience and sharing the collective responses to everyone around you that the real value of making films comes out. It is one thing looking at a DVD alone or playing a video game in isolation or in contact with others online but it is entirely another when you are there to see how a collective group of people laugh, cry and applaud (hopefully for the right reasons) at something you have spent months – maybe even years – working on. It is that ‘rock star’ moment, when you feel the crowd carrying you along with their enthusiasm. There is nothing that compares to that, which is one reason why we put the event on in the first place and why I believe the quality of films is so much better this year.

Paul Fierlinger answering questions at DigiPen.

Speakers like Max Howard and Paul & Sandra Fierlinger offer perspective too. Speaking from each end of the independent animation spectrum they both offered valid and inspirational motivation for continuing a commitment to animated filmmaking. By having such opposing and yet complimentary ideas on production and process it allows the animator to recognize where they fit on that spectrum and move forward accordingly.

Max Howard in the spotlight.

And finally we have to thank all those who have contributed to the success – indeed the very existence – of the “2D OR NOT 2D Animation Festival”. First and foremost is DigiPen Institute of Technology  - through the commitment of COO Raymond Yan and the marketing expertise of Tarsi Hall – and the Pacific Science Center. Other individuals who have given so much to make this year’s festival such a success are Ken Rowe, Saille Schumacher, Isaac Alexander, Barbara Mones, Brad Tollefson and Ryal Hansen. The entire event was filmed in hi-definition by Brad and if the winning filmmakers agree to allowing us to feature their films, we hope to finally bring out a DVD of the event to mark its coming of age this time around. Selected highlights of the event will also be streamed at sometime in the future.

Max in front of the huge IMAX screen that did the short film entries proud!

Of course we cannot wrap up the event this year without thanking each and everyone who turned up and made it the enjoyable experience it was. Thank you one and all – and we hope to see you all back next year when we are determined to make the event even better than this year. (Are you listening filmmakers? There’s still time to finish that award-winning film that could just take one the next Golden Pencils we’ll be offering!) Bottom line, the bigger the success the festival is, the more chance there is of encouraging a real production presence for animated films in the region.

THOUGHT OF YOU (Ryan Woodward/USA)

Thought of You is a contemporary dance animation, drawn in a figurative style of conte on newsprint. The theme allows the viewer viewer to form an independent interpretation of the complexities of intimate relationships.

Note: "Thought of You" is my own personal favorite from all of this year's entries - you should not miss this exquisite film!  Tony.   :^{)}=-

A WONDERFUL START!

The 2011 festival got off to a fabulous start when keynote speakers Max Howard and Paul & Sandra Fierlinger visited the DigiPen campus in Redmond to address a packed lecture hall of students, faculty and industry guests. Both spoke of the animation industry from an independent point of view. Their talks were both exceptional and yet offered invaluable views and observations from both ends of the production spectrum. (i.e. Working within and without the mainstream industry.) Attendees went away with much food for thought and I'm sure with enough information and ideas to generate an active animation production community in the Pacific Northwest. It all augers well for the main festival event starting at 1.00pm at the Eames Theater, Pacific Science Center today!

FREE FESTIVAL BONUS EVENT!

The "2D OR NOT 2D Animation Festival" is proud to announce that Saturday's keynote speakers - Max Howard and Paul & Sandra Fierlinger - have generously agreed to offer an additional, informal, appearance in DigiPen's "Plato" lecture theater at the wonderful new campus, located at 9931 Willows Road, Redmond, WA 98052 this Friday night at 6.30pm

These are great talks for the independent-minded animator. Max will be speaking about creating good story ideas and how to pitch them to studios, while Paul & Sandra will be showing their latest independently produced animation for the web that avoids the traditional financing/distribution mainstream (instead taking advantage of emergent internet technologies).

And before you listen to these terrific lectures - why not sample the splendid food at DigiPen's outstanding "Bits 'n Bites" cafeteria. You won't regret it!

IF A TREE FALLS IN THE FOREST… (Gabriel London/USA)

Timberland wanted us to imagine a life without trees. We may not all be in the forest, listening for the sound - bearing witness - when a clear cut occurs, but we can all imagine a life without trees. It's like the old saying: If a tree falls in the forest, and there's no one around to hear it, does it make a sound? Yes it does. It sounds like this...

IF ITS THURSDAY - ITS DUBLIN!

A hint of the beauty that was to come as we began out descent towards the Irish coastline!

Now in the gorgeous 'Emerald Isle' for the lecture sessions at the ISACON event in Dublin. I have to say that when I saw the coastline through the plane window when about to land my heart felt a beat of excitement and anticipation. I really love this country and I just hope it will not be my last visit here. Unfortunately, there isn't much time to see the sites while I'm here but I thought I'd share a random range of images I took from outside my hotel...

The first day's lectures went really well for everyone concerned and no-one fell asleep during mine, which has to be good! The evening session was a lively panel discussion about animation with a warm-up presentation by Pixar animator, Adam Burke, who took us through the production process at Pixar.

Adam is a fun speaker, with his presentation made all the more dramatic by the extreme shadowy lighting at the venue - "The Sugar Club" on Lower Leeson Street!

Then there were four of us on the panel - chaired by the excellent host, Tomm Moore, superb director of "Secret of Kells". I think there must have been at least 200 or more appreciative animation followers in the packed club audience.

Graham Gallagher, Meret Fritzinger, Tomm Moore, Adam Burke and myself (behind the iPhone)!

So, now its one more lecture to go for me today then off to London Heathrow tomorrow. I think though I'd rather stay to sample the Guinness instead!

BACK ON HOME SOIL FOR A FEW DAYS!

London Heathrow's terminal 5 - seemed good even after a long flight being 'sleepless from Seattle'!

I've just safely negotiated the first leg of a lecture trip to Dublin. It was great to touch down on UK soil again! I've arrived just after the Christmas/New Year festivities - so it was a little like cleaning up after the Lord Mayor's show. But never mind, its good to sniff the UK air again!

Nice to see the Christmas tree was still up in the main terminal - made it feel a little festive at least!

I usually head to Gordon Ramsey's restaurant in the terminal if I have time before or between flights. I always get a really good meal there! They sell superb flight food packs too!

The entrance!

Ended up having a delicious salad with Jasmine tea - a nice light relief after all that airline food! (Although I have to say the British Airways food is way above the norm!)

Then, a few hours later, it was off to Manchester to discover the hotel I'd booked online was all dark and black & red in decor. Surprising - but really nice though. No complaints whatsoever!

My bedroom looked a bit like a place of ill-repute at first but I have to say its really comfortable - even though I woke up at 4.00am this morning wide awake!

Seeing if I can get to catch the Manchester United game tonight - that is, if I can survive a night without sleep on the flight over!

SOMETHING FOR CHRISTMAS!

In the spirit of Christmas tide, goodwill to all men (and women - how come they always got left out?) and the fact that I actually didn't do anything special myself this year - I would like to share this with you all. I think it strikes a resonance within every one of us who has lived with a cat at some time in our lives - and therefore know how the Christmas festivities especially can be (severely) threatened by such canine 'friends'. Anyway, if you've seen it before I apologize for bringing it before you again. If you haven't seen it before - please enjoy it in the spirit in which it is given. Fellow Brit, Simon Tofield, is the creator of the piece and it is yet another example of the wonderful simplicity, joy and uniqueness that well produced traditional 2D animation can bring to our world! The most Yule-est of greetings to one and all!
